Study abroad is much more affordable than in Panama , where living costs are relatively low and public universities are free to everyone, including international students. However, private institutions charge with rates varying depending on the course. Panama has nearly 90 higher educational institutions , including major universities and smaller colleges. Two of them appear in the 2012 QS University Rankings : Latin America - the University of Panama and the Technological University of Panama . Both are based in the capital , Panama City . Other reputable universities in the country include the American University of Panama , Universidad Católica Santa María La Antigua and the American University of Panama . A number of U.S. universities also have branches in Panama , including Florida State University and the University of Louisville. A bachelor's degree is four years and a master's degree lasts for one year, with some exceptions ( MBAs , for example , are two years). The Panamanian academic year is divided into two semesters : summer and autumn, from March to December, respectively. The institutions are closed in January and February and there is a two week holiday in June and July. Spanish is the primary language of tuition for students, but some universities offer English courses at Masters level .

Tuition costs vary, but in general , international students can expect to pay less fees to middling , with many universities charge per credit instead of a semester or year. A universal accreditation system has been introduced in recent years , which should have the effect of increasing the quality in all areas . Undergraduate studies tend to involve two years of study in general, before another couple of years of expertise. Studies Master's and PhD also take about two years each. Spanish remains the primary language of instruction , but there are a small handful of courses designed for international students. In any case, being able to speak at least some Spanish is a plus!
